For Better or For Worse
I lost a receipt from a business lunch, but I needed to be reimbursed. My work colleague told me all I had to do was look online at my bank statement, print out the transaction, and turn it in to the accounting department.
Since my husband was in charge of our money, I never had a reason to visit our bank’s website. After creating a username and clever password (I hate green beans), it was done! I was now a high-tech online account holder. As I scrolled through the seemingly endless list of grocery store visits, gas station transactions, and the occasional Chili’s splurge, the name of a luxury hotel stopped me in my tracks. I caught my breath. For a hot second, a grim thought flashed in my head. I shook it away and chastised myself for entertaining the idea, even for a second, that my sweet, penny-pinching husband had gone to a fancy hotel with someone else.
But there it was. Taunting me from the backlit screen. The Crescent Hotel was the crown jewel of downtown Dallas. Did I mention Chili’s was our splurge?
And then the answer floated into my brain like a drifting feather: our second wedding anniversary was coming up. That had to be it. He must have put a deposit down on an event room. Of course he was throwing me a party, and I had inadvertently ruined the entire surprise.
Truth be told, my insides knew he was too frugal to plan anything at the swankiest hotel in the Metroplex. He openly mocked the pretentious people who spent their hard-earned money on ostentatious places like that. I tried to focus on work, but there was a foreboding, tingling sensation rippling through my body.
After lunch I caved. I called the hotel’s front desk. I explained to John the Business Manager that my credit card had been hacked. I could hear John’s smirk through the phone. He all but openly guffawed at me. Biz Manager John assured me the transaction was legit and asked for my fax number so he could send me a copy.
John had evidently handled this type of call before.
The familiar scrawl was my husband’s. I picked up my keys, left my entire purse for some reason, and walked out of the building holding the fax. I drove to his office, or so it would seem, because the next thing I knew I was entering the bullpen-style setup where he worked. Greetings from familiar coworkers and friends seemed to come from far, far away. My legs were moving but my ears were ringing. Apparently the sound of my name caused my beloved to turn around and catch a glimpse of my face. One look, and he knew. He escorted me right back out the door to a more private location, outside. The first words out of his mouth were, “It was only one time.”
No one told me the traditional gift for a second-year anniversary had been changed from cotton to complete and total devastation.
